A story
is an interesting thing. So is memory, for a lot of the story depends
on one’s memory, and as each person
is different, so is how they recall the story to be told. This premise
unexpectedly turns out to be an introduction to Robert Deeble as he informs
me that the short stories I mentioned I’ve been reading on his
website are truthful accounts of his time on the road. “ I’ve been meaning to write a book about that whole tour, but I’ve never had the discipline to get the rest of the stories out,” he states, “which kind of makes me sad because they’re getting more fictional the longer I wait, but maybe that’s good.” That then begs the question again of how believable all the details are, especially in the exquisite, but tall tale-esque Travels With John. “The story about John I swear is to the letter, but he just heard the story for the first time and claims I have artistic license,” Deeble chuckles. “That’s the way I remember it, but then I remember very interesting details about things, and I highlight them a little bit more than most people would.” |
