Tiny Hairs makes music that touches on multiple styles: Electronica, post-rock, experimental improvisation and even minimalism. Comprised of Mark Booth (guitar), John Devylder (double bass), Charles King (electronics/mixing), Jonathan Liss (guitar), Jim Lutes (drums) and Peter Rosenbloom (violin), the Chicago-based instrumental sextet takes an unorthodox approach to recording, creating improvised pieces in the studio that are then subjected to a rigorous editing process.
The going “hype” is that the group bears more than a passing resemblance to another Chicago-based instrumental collective whose name starts with a ‘T’: Tortoise. While needlessly reductive, this assertion is perhaps not an unfair assessment of their first recording, 2001’s Subtle Invisible Bodies (False Walls), which matches memorable melodies with minimal grooves and ambient electronics.
