I remember reading an interview of Spokane's first album, Leisure and Other Songs, in which the reviewerdeclared with considerable hubris that the record was "not driving music." The intent was, of course, to point out the insuffienciency of the songs—how in their chilling austerity they were unable to assist the listener as he (in this case) went about anohter mundane, wholly unrelated task. For me, though, this critical blunder was in fact a great revelation, because isn't the fact that the music of Spokane can't be driven to precisely the point? Or can everything we make be reduced to its relationship with something else?
