Copper
Press: Hi
Jason. Been a while. How'd you land this gig with QoTSA?
Jason Farrell: Hard work... and nepotism.
CP: What's the word on a new album? By my count you still have fourteen
unreleased songs, as of February 2006. No doubt that list has grown.
JF: Yep: 14 from that batch... Two remain unfinished as they await lyrics,
12 will be the album which we're still unsure who will put out. The labels
we've worked with in the past have fallen on hard times. And with
work/responsibilities/life gobbling up our lives, our tour schedule is
positively emaciated: Hot if yer one of the Olsen twins, but not a sexy
look
in the eyes of a label. but we'll sort it out somehow.
And yes, the list is growing: We just wrote and recorded 5 new songs two
weeks ago; still need vox and mixing.
CP: The EP credits you as recording engineer. Did you record all eighteen
songs yourself? Why the move to self-recording? Will you re-record with
someone like J. once you're ready?
JF: Fuck. i told him to bold the word PRODUCER (i'm going to fire my
graphic designer). Yes, I recorded them. Thought it would be
fun/cheap/educational. Definitely cheaper, but sure took a fuck of a long
time to finish since I had to learn as I went. Would love to work with
someone like J., as he is far better/faster at it than I am.
CP: Is this the longest you've ever gone with a consistent lineup? By my
count, Retisonic has lost exactly zero members, whereas Bluetip employed
numerous bassists and drummers. Is there anything specific to which you
can
attribute the longevity of this particular trio?
JF: Hmmm. Yeah i guess it has been the longest run with the same line-up.
Don't really know why, but perhaps we should celebrate.
CP: I
see from the "!Curses!" video that
you've immersed yourself in the
healing waters of LA. What prompted the move to LA and how long have you
been there?
JF: I was over NYC, tough to keep your head up financially. My wife got
a
job offer in LA so we jumped three years ago. Very happy we did. Gave us
a
chance to get back in the black and gave Retisonic a breather we sorely
needed. Growing up in DC we lived for the warm weather. Now I'm living
out
my childhood fantasy: Perma-summer. add to that a mess of great skateparks
in close proximity and you've got the makings of a full-blown age denial.
That being said, I do miss the East Coast a lot lately... the changing
seasons... and how a bitter cold winter is a strong punctuation mark for
the
end of a year. (Here it's a blur).
CP: When was the last time you skated?
JF: Thursday.
CP: Last LP you played on your record player?
JF: KISS Hotter Than Hell. i used to think it was the low-point in KISS'
early career (high point being Ace's solo record) but now I like it. They
somehow sound hungry and confused.
CP: Last
7" bought?
JF: Found a DISCHARGE Never Again 7" at a record
swap..
CP: Last record for which you did graphic design?
JF: New Joe Lally album on Dischord.
CP: Last time you ate bologna?
JF: Don't know, but you've inspired me to seek it
out for today's lunch.
I like to cut it like an iron cross and fry it up... like eating a fleshy
Independent trucks logo.
