All's not quiet at thequietlife
thequietlife, the clothing and design company started by our friend Andy
Mueller (see interview in CP5), has announced it just posted its
Fall/Holiday collection. And to celebrate, they're having a special offer.
And the offer goes a little something like this: Spend $75 and receive
a
free t-shirt. Visit their online
shop for more details and to see all our new items.
Of particular interest:
Their new cut-n-sew items. They've had a hankering to do cut-n-sew for
a
while, so they're stoked to start it off this season with a military
jacket
and a wool blended sweater. Viva Couture!
This season's "guest artist" t-shirt, designed by Florencio
Zavala. This
design comes packaged with a free zine.
All the new T's, sweatshirts, and accessories.
And while we're pimping our friends, we thought it would be cool to point
out they are running a "Make a Video" contest they're doing
inconjunction
with the re-release of the sold out Poo Poodles CD. The rules, prizes,
deadline, and submission details are on their website.

Jeff Soto "Ice Cold Age"
November 18th - December 16th
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, November 18th, 6-10pm
BLK/MRKT presents esteemed artist Jeff Soto back to
L.A. for his second solo at the gallery, marking BLK/MRKT's fifth year
anniversary exhibition.
Featuring a new series of paintings on canvas, panel and paper, Cold
Ice Age continues Soto's intrepid exploration of his private imaginary
world but with a twist - the amplified conscience of a new parent;
the show's title refers to his intensifying apprehension about the future
of the world on behalf of the next generation.
In addition to receiving both national and international acclaim and
exhibiting in galleries across the country, Soto has been featured in
fine art and popular culture publications including Artweek, Juxtapoz,
American Illustrator, Communication Arts, Beautiful Decay and BLK/MRKT
ONE. Soto's first book, Potato Stamp Dreams was released earlier this
year, published by Mark Murphy. Soto lives and works in Riverside, California,

Jonathan
LeVine Gallery presents...
DONNA CON BAMBINO
New Paintings by Shag
On view November 18th through December 23, 2006
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 18th, 6pm - 9pm
For his first solo exhibition of new works at Jonathan LeVine Gallery,
Donna con Bambino, Shag invites viewers into a playful, mysterious and
ironic world. Juxtaposing pithy subject matter with larger, detailed paintings,
Shag magnifies viewers’ consciousness and experience. Through his
flat-plane technique, vibrant palette, and paradoxical narratives, Shag
expands his sophisticated iconography. Shag’s abstracted works are
the first exhibited series, marking a new direction and technique for the
artist.
For Donna con Bambino, Shag depicts his stylized, seductive women posed
in lavish interiors accompanied by their pets — both unconcerned
by the news of natural or man-made disasters airing live on their televisions.
Surrounded by beautiful things, and enjoying life, these hedonistic women
evoke aloofness in the face of disaster. The viewer is invited to study
these blithe women and how they are reacting to, or not reacting to, the
outside world.
Shag’s series of detailed paintings expand on humor, irony, and theme,
strengthening a visually linked narrative. By cropping each image, Shag’s
rich textures and saturated colors heighten a mood of apathy and indifference,
simultaneously mirroring the personalities of his charismatic women. Donna
con Bambino, refers not only to the relationship of woman with her pet,
but the sets of paintings themselves.
Shag (a contraction of the last two letters of artist Josh Agle’s
first name and the first two letters of his last) lives and works in Los
Angeles. A graduate of California State University, Shag’s works
are celebrated throughout the world including Japan, Australia, and Europe.
Inspired by modern art and architecture of the 50s and 60s, his distinct
style equates with a retro-cool pop aesthetic. Currently, Shag is working
on a group of monumental paintings that will go into many of the historic
modernist houses of Palm Springs. In 2007 Laguna Beach Art Museum will
showcase a retrospective of his work.

Carmen Price - Old Saw
In the middle of all this modern primitivism and lions and tigers and
indians, Carmen Price, a hero of his own imagination, goes down
another path, and in walking builds a way for others to follow him.
There are collages of toothpicks, one painted gold on a blood red
board, there are the precious figurines he's created and composed,
characters called neck beard with ferocious ape-like women prone and
vaguely sexual. It's a good time, dammit. It might be another harbor
of refuge for the banalogues of urban life.

The predominant subject matter in Guinane's work has always been people. He’s
driven by still moments and simple gestures. Whether it is an individual portrait
or a group of people in the street or in a crowded jazz bar, his work allows
the viewer to see deeper into someone. The emotion in a single moment is what
motivates Guinane to paint.

Tour de France wrap-up
Until Stage 16, I was thinking the Tour had lacked the overarching drama
of
recent tours de Lance, which were epic and wonderful for so many reasons,
but when Landis bonked and lost over ten minutes on the final climb of
the
hellish Stage 16, things got heavy.
Landis, who has a degenerative hip condition that will require surgery
possibly as soon as August, fell out of yellow jersey lead by 8:08, a
seemingly insurmountable deficit. Yet the very next day, Landis came
out and
tore the legs off the leaders by launching an attack on the very first
climb
and wound up winning the stage and taking back all but thirty seconds
of the
lead he lost, a lead he'd reclaim for good on the penultimate stage,
which
happened to be a time trial - his specialty.
Faced with an uncertain future and a huge time deficit, Landis set his
mind
to one thing and one thing only: Winning the Tour. He was either going
to
attack attack attack to win the day on Stage 17 or go down in flames.
There
was no middle ground to be had, no tomorrows that mattered if he didn't
claw
his way up the mountains and back into contention. Inspiring stuff.
He finished third in the time trial but the important thing was he overtook
race leader Oscar Pereiro. Andreas Kloden raced his ass off to move up
from
fourth to third over Carlos Sastre. Pereiro finished second, 57 seconds
behind Landis. Viva le Tour!
Viva le Landis!

Popping off in the Tour de France
Team Discovery rebounds to win stage 12.
After what can only be described as a devastating stage in the Pyrenees
yesterday for Team Discovery, they rebounded in fine fashion as Yaroslav
Popovych (whom some of you may remember as the teammate Armstrong barked
at
in last year's tour which sent the young rider off on a 100-yard sprint
that
tore the legs off most of the rest of the riders clinging to Armstrong's
wheel) overtook the three other riders in the breakaway in today's stage
to
win. As today's stage race drew nearer to the finish line, Popvych launched
four separate attacks, using the final one to sever himself from Allesandro
Ballan (Lampre) and Oscar Freire (Rabobank) and cruise to victory. With
his
victory, he also finished 4:25 ahead of race leader Floyd Landis, who rode
safely in the front of the peloton and finished safely in 20th. Popovych
now sits in 10th, 4:15 behind Landis.
Yesterday's disappointing stage for Discovery only worsened in the minutes
after the race when, as the riders were descending the mountain to the
team
hotel, Paolo Savoldelli collided with a spectator and crashed, leaving
him
with a cut that required thirteen stitches, along with back pain and
headaches which forced him to abandon the race today. Another teammate,
Benjiman Noval also abandoned today. But Popovych came through for Team
Discovery, pushing himself up alongside teammate Jose Azevado (who resides
in the top 20) with his stage victory today.

Floyd = Fast
Floyd Landis Wins Stage 10 of 2006 Tour de France
Our boy Floyd Landis has assumed control of the 2006 Tour de France,
taking
third on yesterday's grueling Stage 11 that traversed a mere five mountains
in the Pyrenees. And these were nasty, nasty climbs. It was an epic day
for the former domestique to Lance Armstrong, who left Team US Postal
after
the 2005 season to join Phonak. Landis, a rocker raised by Mennonite
parents in rural PA, who once in the 1990s won a mountain bike championship
in our backyard here in Traverse City, MI, is racing in spite of a
disintegrating hip that will require an operation after the Tour.
Landis, fellow American Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) and Russia's Denis
Menchov shattered an already select group of seven riders near the top
of
the final mountain on the stage as Leipheimer and Menchov each attacked
-
attacks that were easily controlled by Landis. In the end, Menchov won
the
stage, Leipheimer climbed from 58th to 13th overall (we predict he'll
be on
the podium - with Landis and Davitamon-Lotto's Kadel Evans - in Paris),
but
it was Landis, by virtue of his third place finish and eight-second time
bonus, who overtook yesterday's surprise race leader Cyril Dessel (Ag2r)
by
that very amount to don the yellow jersey. Sweet.

"I HIDE IN SNAKES"
STEFAN DANIELSSON
JUNE 16 - JULY 9, 2006
OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST: FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 6-9 pm
This is the first solo exhibition by Swedish artist Stefan Danielsson
Baron Samedi and Papa Gede are different names for the chief death spirit (Gede
Loa) in the Haitian vodou pantheon. He's the head of the decomposing Gede family
which consists of countless spirits all connected to death in one way or another.
Baron Samedi is usually portrayed as a rotting corpse, dressed in a black costume,
top hat and sunglasses because he hates the light. The cross is his main symbol
but it has nothing to do with the Christian cross. Instead it symbolizes the
crossroads which are an important magical site in vodou, as it is in many other
magical systems. The vertical line of the cross stands for the spiritual side
and the horizontal for the material.
In Stefan Danielsson's first solo exhibition he shows collages which draw strongly
from such cultural motifs from Africa and Haiti. His works seem to have aged
a hundred years since this young artist started making them. His care for the
beauty in a picture stands in contrast against the often uncomfortable subject
matter, and his meticulous attention to details can be seen in his choice of
materials; antique papers, real snake scales, dried grass etc.

The Press is touring
The Press is going out on tour. No, not "the press" as in "members
of the
press" - though wouldn't that be sweet? Get a bunch of cooler-than-you
writers together and put them on tour. Have them stand on stage one at
a
time and read their reviews or columns while the audience stands with
their
heads cocked in boredom, boos or shouts things like "Sounds like
a cross
between (insert two middle-of-the-road authors here) with dyslexia." Or
better yet, the crowd could ignore the writers altogether. "When's
Chuck
Palahniuk coming to town?" "I dunno. I only read stuff put
out by AK
Press." And so on. We'd have to put a cop on every bridge in town,
there'd
be so many critics looking to leap. Good times.
You'll be pleased to know Atlanta's The Press leaves for tour today.
They're heading out in support of the 7" out now on Goodnight

Von Dutch Tribute ll - "Art
of Von Dutch" book release
and signing at Capro Nason
May 20th through June 10, 2006
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 20, 8-11 PM
Live music from the “Dynotones”
In June of 1996, Copro/Nason gallery curated the epic “Von Dutch
Tribute exhibition” in honor of the late, legendary Kustom
Kulture icon and master craftsman, Von Dutch . This seminal exhibition
featured original flying eyeballs, pinstripe panels, monster illustrations,
sculptures and a Dutch-built 1947 Kenworth body mounted on a Ford truck
chassis. Over 25 artists featured in the the show included Coop, Von
Franco, Stanley Mouse, Frank Kozik, Anthony Ausgang and many others who
were directly inspired by Von Dutch's painting, pinstriping and awe-inspiring
master craftsmanship.
Von Dutch earned his reputation in the 1950's as the premier pinstriper
of cars and motorcycles in an age of mushrooming interest in hot rod
and kustom car cultures. In the 60's, he focused his expertise on restoring
antique motorcycles, developing a regard for machines as works of art.
In the 70's he spent time at the Movieworld: Cars of the Stars Museum
in Buena Park , CA , where he did everything from scratch-building autos
to fabricating their elaborate displays. Through the 80's, his love of
craft found new expression in a steam-powered TV set, hand-made guns
and approximately 100 knives with exquisite brass etchings, all crafted
by hand, without the aid of measuring tools.
Von Dutch (Kenny Howard) died September 19, 1992. In tribute, his work
formed the catalyst (along with Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and Robert
Williams) for the 1993 Kustom Kulture exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum
. This exhibition was the first significant museum show to bring hot
rod-influenced artists to the attention of a new audience not used to
thinking about automobiles as “Art.”
More than thirteen years later, Von Dutch's art continues to influence
a new generation of artists and, as evidenced by the successful clothing
line bearing his name, has achieved the status of an internationally
recognized brand-name of “hip” popular culture. Von Dutch
Tribute II includes many of the artists in the original tribute exhibit,
as well as new paying homage to the work that inspired them.

The Race is not over (pant).
Keep (pant) running.
Chicago's The Race has reformed. After releasing two cerebrally-pleasing
yet underrated records in 2004 on the Flameshovel imprint, The Race found
themselves limping home with shin splints and road rash, unable or unwilling
to continue. All that's changed now. According to one of the label's
honchos, singer/guitarist Craig Klein "has fleshed out a new album's
worth
of songs and has the band together as a five-piece." Word has it
they'll be
in the studio in a couple of weeks - presumably to record these songs
- and
there's hope of a fall release, so get those track shoes back out of
the
closet. Pinebender records new songs, posts them on MySpace
Chicago's Pinebender has recorded and posted two of its newest songs.
Unmastered as they are, they still sound pretty sweet to these ears.
We
can't wait until they sound even louder. Loud is one of the things
Pinebender does and does well. Lots of band are loud, but few are as
loud
and unrepentant while being as tuneful as Pinebender. Check out their
fantastic debut on Ohio Gold as well as subsequent
records on Jade Tree and Lovitt. New record reportedly will be eight
songs
lasting probably an hour. Nice.

Michael McLeod has been a part of Copper Press since CP1, when his Secret
Knowledge of Backroads photo essay first appeared. Since, he's contributed
several photo essays, often adding cryptic text to further pique our
minds. On 4.13.06, he had a show open at Cape Breton University Art
Gallery. There will be an Artist's Talk on 4.20, followed by the official
opening on 4.21. According to McLeod, "the title of the show is 'Geography
Is Killing Me' and it is a huge exhibition featuring over eighty color
diptychs, triptychs, panoramic images, and other outlooks on my reaction to
the great country of Canada. The show will then move to Halifax in June for
a showing at Viewpoint Gallery." He is looking to expand beyond these two
shows as he feels this is some of his "strongest work to date." A tall
order, but we are inclined to agree.

Who
the fuck cares about a track list for an upcoming record? Why is that
news?
Oh, because it's a hip band and it generates hits on the ol' website...),
we're nevertheless pleased to inform you of some truly exciting news.
And
who knows? Maybe we can generate some hit counts with new hybrid band
name
we've created!
Valina is touring Russia. Russia, for all its pretenses about being a
free
country, is still headed up by one Vladimir Putin. Vlad's no Jimmy Carter
with better shoulders - he's much much worse (well, they're both bound
to
certify some questionable-at-best election results). The dude ran the
KGB.
But still, Russia's borders are open now - even if the paperwork's a
bitch,
and Valina, a trio from Austria whose EP was released by 54º40' or Fight!
released last fall, is playing four shows there in a couple of weeks.

but word has it they're actually flying and have papers and everything.
Man, almost makes you miss the Cold War.

EAST LANSING, Mich.* (SCENE) Metrospace announces the opening of its
latest exhibition, They Die In Movies on Saturday, March
25. "They Die In Movies" explores the multi-faceted directions
of film, fashion, music, and photography.
They Die In Movies is based on a movie script written by local
artist/producer, Jeni Mc. Rather than actually filming the movie, the
making of it was documented through two diverse forms of photography:
poloroid and digital. Prints for this show were made possible largely
in part by the support of Richard Galosy Photography. The production
features costume design by local fashion mogul Berry Noxon, and the photography
of Lansing-based artists Cody Lee Hinze and Juan Beltran.
Other local and national artists also involved in They Die In Movies include:
Lansing-based poster design master Craig Horky, Lansing-based artist
Gavin Lupinski, critically acclaimed Toronto-based Artist Collaborative
P0isson (comprised of Canadian artists Rose Chang & Stephanie Drabik),
Lansing Community College instructor and artist Linda Spyke, Detroit
based mixed-media artist Andrew Hugelier, Detroit-based film company
Test Pattern Pictures, and East Lansing-based printmaker Justin Munger.
They Die In Movies opens with a free public reception at (SCENE)
Metrospace on Saturday, March 25 from 6-10 p.m. This is also the CD release
party for Lansing-based indie record label It Takes A Village To Make
Records' 20-song compilation disc entitled "First-hand Accounts,
Theories & Their Repercussions." The reception will feature
live performances by Detroit acoustic songstress Rai, and Lansing-based
indie rock band Canada. Food will be generously donated by Foods For
Living. All ages are welcome, and space is limited. They Die In Movies will
run through May 7.

Tory Wright The
exhibition will run from March 3rd through April 1st and is on view Saturdays

Goin’ Pro an exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Jerstin Crosby
will combine pop culture and sport elements with child-like sensibilities
that he dubs “vacation bible school aesthetics”. Crosby will
show embroidered tennis rackets, paintings of celebrities from paparazzi
photos, and a cardboard wood-chipper that ejects artful mulch when prompted.
In the project room, GoodyBumps Go Adrift features an installation by
Tory Wright that will include her sculptural paintings that promise to
ooze off the wall with a flash of humor, sexuality, and the grotesque,
in masterfully saturated colors.
Both Crosby and Wright are members of the art collective Team Lump and
have been included in exhibitions at The Atlanta Center for Contemporary
Art, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Bemis Underground, District
of Columbia Art Center and University of Virginia among others. These
are their first solo exhibitions at Lump.

Reverend Charlie Jackson Dies
It is with great sadness that we here at CaseQuarter Records
must convey the news that Bishop Charlie Jackson of
Baker, Louisiana has passed away. Bishop Jackson, known to many blues,
gospel and music lovers in the wider world as the Reverend Charlie Jackson,
died in his sleep at a local Baker, LA nursing home early Monday morning
Febuary 13th. Reverend Jackson had been confined to the 24 hour care
facility since the spring of 2005 after suffering the latest in a series of
lifelong strokes. His wife, Laura Davis Jackson, said that Reverend Jackson
had been unable to recognize anyone since his admittance and his health had
steadily declined.
For anyone reading this, Reverend Jackson's music needs no introduction or
reminders. Along with Elder Utah Smith, Jackson was one of few of the
widespread guitar slinging gospel preachers to actually record commercial
records and it is such a treasure, especially now, that we have his unique
testaments. I still savor the moment when I first heard Chris Smith's and
Lynn Abbott's cassette of Reverend Jackson's music. It's a cliche but
nonetheless too true: it literally changed my life.
Not suprisingly, Reverend Jackson in person was even more impressive than
his music. On the occasions that I visited him I was overwhelmed with his
perpetual warm heartedness and enthusisam. It was such a delight to be with
him and his wife Laura. - Kevin Nutt, CaseQuarter Records Thee Shams Disband
Cincinnati, OH's Thee Shams has decided to lay down their gear after
seven
years of writing, recording and touring. Zac Gabbard - no doubt flustered
by his and his band not being confused more often with Death Cab for
Cutie
or its Ben Gibbard - commented, "We needed to do this so everyone
can get
their shit together. Most of us are on the verge of complete mental and
physical break-down." DCFC, on the other hand, I saw performing
on a PBS
station the other day to a seated crowd of what looked like those fake
cardboard people with which film production companies line the crowds
of
football games. Creepy.
Anyway, Thee Shams were a helluva a live band; people at their shows
didn't
sit on their asses - they were knocked on them. Long live Thee Shams

Carrie Marill :: Duke and Duchess
Project room - Objects of Desire with Helen Altman, Laura Ball, Mel Kadel,
Kim Krans, D'nell Larson, and Robin Ward
February 4 -25, 2006
Reception: Saturday, February 4 from 6-9pm
@ sixspace :: 5803 Washington Blvd. in Culver City (entrance in back)
sixspace is pleased to present the latest body of work by Arizona-based
artist Carrie Marill, Duke and Duchess. This exhibition depicts personal
items included in the Sotheby estate auction (#700) that took place September
11-19, 1997 for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Mrs. Wallis Simpson
and Edward, Prince of Wales. Mounted in walnut frames with adorning ribbons
marked with the Windsor/Wallis family seal, Carrie Marill's fourteen
new gouache paintings poke fun at genre painting, celebrity, and the
idea of ownership. Perhaps most significantly, these paintings deal with
the gluttony of winning and how the act of gaining a possession is often
times more thrilling than the end result. Duke and Duchess suggests that
the act of acquiring an item from this family of stature, with a salacious
history attached, during such an exciting event can prove to be even
more desirable than the object itself.
Concurrent with Marill's theme in Duke in Duchess, the group exhibition
of works-on-paper in the project room exhibits, quite literally, objects
and situations of desire. Artists include Helen Altman, Laura Ball, Mel
Kadel, Kim Krans, D'nell Larson, and Robin Ward.
Carrie Marill received her BA at San Francisco State University (2000)
and her MFA from Cornell University, NY (2004). Recent exhibitions include
Plaid at Platform Gallery in Tucson, AZ; Plants and Trees at the Stanlee & Gerald
Rubin Center for the Visual Arts in El Paso, TX; and Terra Non Firma
at Howard House in Seattle, WA. Her last Los Angeles exhibition was at
sixspace in November 2004. She will also be included in New American
City this fall/winter at Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ. Grants
include the Contemporary Forum of Phoenix Art Museum Artist Grant (2005),
The Charles Baskerville Painting Award, Cornell University (2004) and
the CCA Grant, Cornell Council on the Arts (2003). Duke and Duchess marks
Marill’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

EXCLUSIVE MID-MICHIGAN SCREENING OF THE
HIGHLY ACCLAIMED DUMA
The East Lansing Film Society Film Series is proud to announce the exclusive
screening of the highly acclaimed film, Duma, directed by Carroll Ballard.
The beautiful film will be screened at 6:30pm on Tuesday, January 31
and Wednesday, February 1 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center,
819 Abbott Road. Tickets are $7 and $5 for students and seniors over
65. The film is rated PG.Set in the exotic country of South Africa, Duma
tells the powerful adventure tale of an unbreakable bond of friendship
between a cheetah named Duma and a courageous young boy named Xan. Directed
by Carroll Ballard, the very talented director of films involving animals
- Black Stallion, Never Cry Wolf and Fly Away Home.
"
Like those earlier films, Duma is the work of a magician,
a director capable of joining visual poetry with matter of fact plausibility,
someone adept at using the world of animals to give us moving insights
into our own. Simultaneously innocent and sophisticated, this honestly
emotional fable shows why every Ballard film — and his last was
released almost a decade ago — is a special event." -

Chin Up Chin Up sign to Suicide
Squeeze
Chicagoans Chin Up Chin Up have signed to the Suicide Squeeze and will
release their next album in October, according to the Seattle-based indie
label. This perplexing news - a lateral move if there ever was one - can
only mean one thing: CU CU is angling to get themselves in Sub Pop's
sights. The Chicago label Flameshovel (The Joggers,
The Narrator, Low Skies, Viza-Noir, Judah Johnson, Bound Stems, et al)
saw
to the band's needs until now, overseeing the release of two fine albums,
including last year's reissue EP and 2004's We Should Have Never Lived
Like
We Were Skyscrapers. Read about CU CU in CP26, out very soon.
