SCOTT HARRISON "UNDIGESTED
KERNEL"
Scott Harrison is an internationally recognized tattoo artist, infamous
for his peculiar cartoon imagery, twisted and appalling tattoo design
sheets and lack of finesse. He has tattooed all over the US as well as
Europe and Japan. His clients have included such diverse celebrities
as Master P, Kiki Smith, Tony Fitzpatrick, and a good
chunk of the cast of Miami Ink. Harrison's paintings have been exhibited
in galleries and museums around North America and Europe. He has an MA
in illustration, and taught cartooning at New York's School of Visual
Arts. Harrison currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon. The exhibition
features 14 original 12" by 16" ink
on paper
originals from his upcoming book "Undigested Kernel" (La Luz
de Jesus Press ISBN: 978-0-86719-695-5) will be released in June 2008. "

Basil Wolverton. Imagine if you can... Definitely not for the faint of
heart." ---Thomas

SAM SAGA "ARCHITECTUAL MONSTERS"
"
Architectural Monsters," Saghatelian's recent, evolving series of
drawings, sketches, and paintings in multi-media (acrylic, ink pen, watercolor
with Indian ink on wood panel, board and archival paper) is a study in
the phantasmagoric mutation of the human form into architectural monstrosities.
As it develops, the series will also
comprise sculptures and installations. Saghatelian draws inspiration
from the outrageous kitsch emblematic of the nouveau riche, particularly
in developing nations, which often manifests in newly built palatial
residences or commercial towers that scream power, individuality, and
a scale that aims to eclipse the rest of the
metropolis. In devising the central theme of the series, Saghatelian
also taps into Japanese monster myths and horror movies featuring mechanical
leviathans.
Whereas architecture serves as a concretized expression of a given culture's
zeitgeist – its artistic aspirations, collective concerns, fears,
and positioning vis a vis the future – the architectural monsters
which Saghatelian references are disconnected from their milieus, pointing
at a grotesqueness that both subverts and transcends
prevalent values and delimitations. These monstrosities – the human
machine bolstered by mortar and steel – ultimately come into being
as statements of pure ego, intent on rocking the boat but also wrenching
control of it. Saghatelian is interested in seeing the boundaries of
respectability and taste being pushed as far as the imagination can accommodate,
revealing a fascination with the sheer creativity involved in ostentation,
extravagance, and garishness. Thus his architectural monsters can be
not only ridiculous and pathetic, but at turns cute and even touching
in their folly. Saghatelian also explores the possibility of actually
building the monsters portrayed on his
canvases. Were these human-shaped structures to be constructed in the
real world, Saghatelian believes that they would symbolize the essential,
prowling monstrosity of the postmodern psyche: a state of sustained loneliness
and uncertainty redeemed by selfishness and rapacity, often culminating
in an unprecedented level of grotesque chic.
THOMAS WARGIN
Inspired by the rich history of art and design and his background as
a designer for Harley Davidson Motorcycles, sculptor Thomas Wargin uses
bronze and aluminum to convey his view of the human experience – the
merger of man into the modern world. "I am driven by the history
of art and design and am inspired by some of the great masters;
Michelangelo's love for the human form, Leonardo Da Vinci's exploration
of machines and mechanisms, and Pablo Picasso's extraordinary influence
on the modern movement. All these and many others have laid stepping
stones of ideas that have influenced my own work and a continued urge
for excellence," states Wargin. Blending old and new technique,
Wargin begins his creation with sketches, which evolve into clay or carved
3-dimensional forms. Using various molding techniques, resin models are
created and are hand packed into flasks with casting sand, ready for
the casting process. Wargin then melts aluminum and bronze. After cooling,
parts are assembled for rough fit
and positioning. Meticulously he either welds or drills, tap and screw
every component together to check for form, fit, and overall composition.
Some pieces are then disassembled to be polished or sandblasted. He completes
the desired finish through high polish buffing or patination. Some of
Wargin's art adds a diverse mixture of materials both raw and manmade
such as: various woods, stone, glass, or even original drawings. With
the combination of these materials, Wargin's goal is to compliment not
compete in the composition and make it more inviting. This type of processes
and materials allow his work to be spontaneous and assures each piece
an original. Thomas Wargin
earned his BFA at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.

"Cry
Me a River"
Photographic work by Chris Eichenseer
On Friday May 2nd, there will be an opening reception for my exhibition "Cry
Me a River" at the Threadless Gallery space in Chicago. The exhibit
is the first of it's kind for me in 8 years, during which I have wanted
to show work but things always seemed too busy at Someoddpilot to give
it the proper attention. I've been wanting to change that pattern, and
this show is the first step.
"
Cry Me a River" will feature large color prints of work shot on
film over the past two years of disembodied places, urban landscapes
and small corners. I am really excited about these pieces as these are
images crafted and pulled from years of working.
The Threadless Gallery is a great art space located on the second floor
above their newly-opened retail store. They've hosted work by fellow
Chicago designers Chuck Anderson (no pattern) and Nigel Evan Dennis (electric
heat), and I am happy to have the opportunity to be a part of that tradition.
I hope this email finds all of you well. I would love to see any you
at the reception. Look for me, I will be the guy wincing from the sort
of migraine I am apt to give myself as a reward for a little bit of hard
work.

JONATHAN
LEVINE GALLERYpresents:
CHRIS MARS
New Salem
Solo Exhibit October 20 - November 17, 2007
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 19, 7pm - 9pm NEW YORK, NY– American
artist Chris Mars debuts more than 25 new works in his exhibition New Salem,
opening at Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York City on October 20, 2007.
The paintings, all created this year, reflect themes of political persecution
and corruption, interpersonal unity and cruelty, condemnation, redemption
and hope by use of Mars’ stunning technical control of his medium,
and his wrenching empathy relative to world events.
Mars’ personal vision was borne of his intimate childhood experience
with mental illness. When Mars was a small boy, his oldest brother was
diagnosed with schizophrenia and institutionalized. He witnessed the cruel
response of society, denial from his own family, and the prison-like corridors
of the state hospital where his brother was held captive, probed, and drugged.
This traumatic experience struck him profoundly. An oeuvre that began in
championing the misunderstood, over-medicated and under-cared for wards
of the medical establishment found a natural evolution into the championing
of all those who are misunderstood or persecuted. At times, New Salem evokes
a call for understanding, warmth, and sympathy. Yet more searing testimony
is portrayed as well with a shift in tone from urging comfort for the Victim
to a proposed unmasking of the Perpetrator.
The artist himself holds strong social and political beliefs but feels
the presentation of “truth” in his work is limited, as it is
still a very personal one. Mars does not profess to offer objectivity – merely
the honest inspection of himself relative to his environment. He does not
teach, but rather reveals. Says Mars: “I’m just tattling, not
holding trial.” He considers individual interpretation a crucial
element in his work. “My goal is to generate consideration and create
dialog, in hopes that thinking about something, talking about it, and considering
it, can lead to peace – personally, socially, or politically. I seek
to generate an authentic emotional response, then to analyze it, then see
if the emotional response is an appropriate one. I want a viewer to feel.
I always want a viewer to think about how they feel, and why.” As
of the date of this release, it is not known whether the rather reclusive
Mars will be in attendance at the opening reception.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
The work of Chris Mars has been exhibited at Museums such as: The Minneapolis
Institute of Art, The Minnesota History Center, The Longview (Texas) Museum
of Fine Art, The Erie Art Museum, The Steensland Art Museum, The Frederick
Weisman Art Museum, The American Visionary Art Museum and Art Center of
South Florida. His work is also held in numerous prestigious public and
private collections. Once known best as a musician, Mars was a founding
a member of The Replacements, and after their demise recorded four highly-touted
solo albums. He dedicated himself to the visual arts rather exclusively
by the mid-1990s. Tolerance, Mars’ debut monograph featuring over
100 of his paintings, will be released in late spring of 2008. The artist
says, “It’s a ‘green’ book. Published using vegetable-based
inks, on recycled, bleach-free paper. It was not made by slaves, the printing
costs do not sponsor State tyranny, no child’s hands will have sewn
the binding. It’s green and it’s fair-trade. It took a while
to make that happen. I think I’m as proud of that as I am of the
work inside it.”
CHRIS MARS Mark Dean Veca
Imbroglio
Solo Installation in the Project RoomOctober 20 - November 17
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 20, 7pm - 9pm
Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to announce Imbroglio, a new installation
by Mark Dean Veca. This will be the artist's first solo show at Jonathan
LeVine Gallery and his most ambitious New York exhibition to date. For
Imbroglio, Veca presents 17 new paintings on panel which will be incorporated
into an all-encompassing installation.
In his latest body of work, Mark Dean Veca continues to explore the unification
of opposing elements- high vs. low, elegant vs. vulgar, masculine vs.
feminine, micro vs. macro, figure vs. ground, all with humor and playfulness.
Using the French Rococo textile pattern known as Toile de Jouy as a compositional
infrastructure, Veca improvises a phantasmagoria of pop iconography,
cartoon abstraction, art history, biomorphic psychedelia, and sexual
innuendo. John Belushi, Jimi Hendrix, and Colonel Klink mingle with Koons’s
Rabbit, Tennessee Tuxedo and Viagra, while the Three Stooges schmooze
with AC/DC over by the mushroom cloud. This overload of visual stimuli
is finely rendered with brush and ink under the influence of Underground
Comix, Phillip Guston, Mad Magazine, Franz Kline, and Dr. Seuss.
The resulting round and oval-shaped panels are then seamlessly integrated
into a site-specific wall drawing where, as Carlo McCormick wrote of
Veca’s previous installations, “confines create ideas, obstacles
dictate illusions, and the proliferation of optic information ignites
a kind of brain-searing explosion.”ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mark Dean Veca was born in 1963 in Shreveport, Louisiana, and received
his BFA in Painting at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, CA. He currently
lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been shown throughout the
United States, Europe, and Japan at institutions such as PS1/MOMA, The
Drawing Center, The Brooklyn Museum, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum,
and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Reviews of Veca's work have appeared
in numerous publications including The New York Times, Juxtapoz, Artforum,
Art in America, and Flash Art. He has received numerous awards including
fellowships from The New York Foundation for the Arts in 1998 and 2002,
as well as a grant from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation in 2006.

The Green Lantern presents:
New Work by Nicholas Kashian
Opens FRIDAY 10/19 with a reception from
7-10pm
"
Pascua," an exhibition of new paintings and collages by Chicago
artist Nicholas Kashian will be on display from Friday October 19th
until November 19th. In this series, Kashian explores discarded
familial memorabilia and cultural detritus that he has harvested from
city trash, thrift stores and garage sales. For his series New
American Gothic, found slides and photos, featuring two families, one
Hispanic and one African American are caught in the midst of their own
private rituals. These figures are then brought back into the studio,
projected on blank canvases and then recontextualized through a
variety of materials that reference painterly concerns and collage,
and examine the way images function as they are manipulated,
reconstructed and deconstructed. The figures depicted appear as
ghosts, with skewed colors—the basic forms create the structure
for
the piece, within which Kashian intuits and projects his own meaning.
While at once coming closer to the families through the study of these
photos, understanding better the various members of each family,
Kashian is nevertheless always standing at a critical distance,
filling the gaps of understanding with imagination and supposition and
interpretation. Similar techniques and concerns spill onto record
covers and other collage materials, continuing the basic investigation
of image manipulation and cultural critique. Nicholas Kashian is
pursuing his MFA at UIC. He was also included in "New American
Painters Midwestern 2007" edition.

Jonathan LeVine Gallery presents:
Jeff Soto -Storm Clouds
Through October 6th
Jonathan LeVine Gallery is proud to announce Storm Clouds,
a solo exhibit of new works by Jeff Soto and the artist’s second major show at the
gallery. Storm Clouds, features over thirty new works on wood panel and
paper, as well as large-scale installations that will focus on the theme
of politics, fear, and fatherhood. Storm Clouds is Jeff Soto’s most
politically charged exhibition to date.
For Storm Clouds, Jeff Soto explores his predominant fears and anxieties
over his daughter’s future, the civil war in Iraq, and the United
States policies on environmental conservation. Soto’s concern for
the American population’s indifference and a general disconnection
to global affairs are motivating factors behind his overtly mature subject
matter. Storm Clouds is ripe with metaphors that allude to the fate of
the planet should neglect and indifference prevail. Soto’s expressive
narratives evoke inherent contradictions, crossing between notions of a
precarious and fragile natural world on the brink of extinction with one
that is an indestructible, organic mass.
Executed with a sophisticated mélange of graffiti and mixed media
techniques, Jeff Soto’s paintings permeate with influences of popular
culture, science fiction, and memories of nuclear war. Illustrating these
notions, Soto creates a futuristic world where ominous clouds dominate,
exotic plants struggle to survive, and colored prisms symbolize hope amidst
desolate landscapes. Soto’s creatures, floating gardens, and religious
symbols exist in entangled masses, revealing a civilization’s decline,
destruction, and efforts to regenerate. In this surreal universe, an inevitable
ice age has befallen, humans are extinct and fantastic robotic creatures
flourish. Swarms of oil-like cloud formations expand on themes of death
and decay, while subtle and bold use of text emphasizes the artist’s
most intense trepidations and desires.
“
I wish more Americans would take a stand, get educated and try to make
a difference,” states Soto. “I know making paintings is like
preaching to the choir, most fans of my art are aware of what’s going
on a global level. But I might be able to reach a few open minds here and
there. That's why there's always a hint of optimism in my paintings. I
think we can make things better somehow.”

Roq la Rue Gallery presents:
Nicoletta Ciccoli and Kukula
opening Friday, July 13th - 6-9pm
show runs through August 4th
Roq la Rue is pleased to present two artists who create paintings of young
women in fanciful, melancholic situations.
Nicoletta Ciccoli (San Marino, Italy) has made a name for herself illustrating
children's books, including winning the prestigious Italian Anderson Prize
for best illustrator of the year in 2001. She recently has been showing
paintings in US galleries and has already has already garnered great
demand for her allegorical, luminous, dream-like paintings. Painted in
acrylic on paper, each work is meticulously crafted to the point where
brush stokes disappear, and the girls in her work seem to enveloped within
their own hazy light.
This is her first major US gallery exhibition.
Kukula (San Francisco) takes a darker spin, placing her sexy/sickly doll-like
subjects in situations usually only one step away from disaster. In this
particular series, she explores the idea of the "last hour before
death", using death as a metaphor for both a beginning and an end.
She has painted most of her paintings in a 5" x 7" format to
better play of the concept of her characters final "snapshots",
and the work will be displayed in a memento mori/funeral type setting.

VIVA will be featuring a number of paintings and should be the star attraction
of the evening while she plays host to both shows! VIVA is a multi-talented individual
as can be seen by the quality of her artwork. This will be a rare chance to meet
VIVA in person and ask her what it was like to work with and be a part of the
Warhol posse.
As always, admission for the reception is free and open to the public with complimentary
drinks served and music playing to celebrate the opening of this weekend extravaganza.
VIVA's paintings will continue to be displayed for a while after at the gallery.

The Green Lantern
June 2- July 1, 2007
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 2// 7-10pm
8pm performance by Mathias Kristersson – Every time I open my mouth
water comes out. It makes it difficult for me to speak.
Concert: Saturday, June 9// 7-10pm
Performances by Mathias Kristersson, Todd Mattei, Male, and others
Chicago, IL: The Green Lantern is pleased to present "Nothing is
possible to explain with language. It's without it it's impossible."
"
Nothing is possible to explain with language. It's without it it's
impossible." features new work by Mathias Kristersson and a project
room by Todd Mattei. "Nothing is possible to explain with language.
It's without it it's impossible." is the title and the thesis of this
exhibition.
Words are abstractions that can mean anything. They are
interchangeable devices that enable and hinder ideas, noises, and
images. Describe an optical illusion without words. Express silence
with words. This exhibition asks its audience to think about/listen
to/interact with language in a new way.
"
Nothing is possible to explain with language. It's without it it's
impossible." is a solo exhibition by Swedish artist Mathias
Kristersson. He uses sound, video and text to investigate the limits
of language. If language constructs reality, then this work creates a
new reality in order to deconstruct language. This exhibition is not
about semiotics.
"
Nothing is possible to explain with language. It's without it it's
impossible." has a project space by Todd Mattei. He makes digital
paintings (Yes, digital paintings. He situates digital media visually
and ideologically into the history of painting. That is a long story.
Nothing is constantly changing. It's an illusion that cannot be fixed
by the eyes). This exhibition is not conceptual.
Mathias Kristersson (b 1979) lives and works in Malmö, Sweden. He was
educated at Malmö Art Academy and UIC. The artist previously
participated in several exhibitions in Scandinavia, Istanbul, Turkey
and Chicago. This is his first solo exhibition in the United States.
Todd Mattei is an artist based in Chicago, where he received his MFA
from the University of Illinois, Chicago. His work is in technological
media including video, photography, and music. Past exhibitions
include Rowland Contemporary, Gallery 400 and Bridge Art Fair in
Chicago; the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and Publico in Cincinnati. He
has performed music throughout the U.S., in Europe, and Japan.

DKRM Gallery presents:
CATHARINE
STEBBINS-PLACES
March 10 – April 14, 2007
Reception for the Artist: Saturday, March 10 2007 7-10 pm
Stebbins was inspired by childhood trips through the desert and views
the world as a full-scale diorama framed by the rear window of a 1963
Chevy station wagon. She finds the geographically remote inspiring. The “right
place” drives the tedium from her mind into a world of imagination
and possibility. “Vast, harsh deserts; dirt roads leading to unseen
canyons; beautiful places that I know could also be dangerous, are like
homing devices for me. Places where I feel insignificant yet powerful,
connected, and wholly alive” says Stebbins.
The locations in these large scale color photographs create feelings
of connectedness and ascendancy, anticipation and maybe a little dread;
locations that transcend the confines of time, where the past coexists
with the present, and fact and fiction become one. The viewers Intuition
determines if the given locale is special or just another vacant lot,
a hallowed site of worship or tragedy.
“
Stebbins’ photographs are like a crime scene…without a body.”
Image and artist statement.

Lunar Boy Gallery
Paintings by Mike Lewis
Saturday, February 10 6-9 PM
After a stormy season of wind, rain and snow, the North Coaster residents
and visitors can enjoy a lively art event to break the wet winter routine. Grab
the coats and hats and head to downtown Astoria on the evening of Saturday,
February 10th and much will be found to delight the senses and inspire
the mind. It is Astoria Arts Night Out and the Lunar Boy Gallery
will be doing it up Lunar Boy Style!
Featuring the work of Seattle artist, Mike Lewis, beer truck driver by
day - impassioned artist by nature. Lewis has a degree in illustration
from Syracuse, New York, and brings to Astoria a show entitled: "Mechanized
Compassion and the New Millennia" featuring acrylic paintings. These
visually rewarding pieces are surreal yet down to earth, many with muted
tones and a feeling of benevolent darkness sporting characters that could
have walked out of the infrastructure of the movie, Brazil.
As is often the case at Lunar Boy, our artists hail from all over the
planet so it is always a bonus when the creator is on hand to discuss
the work and meet the local art enthusiasts. In honor of the artist's
favorite prepackaged dessert - Little Debbie snack cakes will be served
along with a healthy dose of festive beverages that will be driven down
from Seattle be the artist himself.
In addition to our featured show, Lunar Boy Gallery owner, Deborah Starr,
has also pulled together a spontaneous artistic exercise called "Love
Letters" that will debut on this opening night. Seven artists
were given several 6 x 6 inch boards, each designated with a different
letter of the alphabet. The exercise was to create a piece of art
using the letter that represents something that has to do with love. Two
of the participating artists, Joan Charles and Rebecca Reka O'Connell,
were winners of the Children's Book Writers and Illustrators contest
juried by Starr. At Lunar Boy gallery during the November 2006 Astoria
Arts Night Out, patrons were able to vote and O'Connell's piece received
the "People's Choice Award".

Many Buffaloes
February 3 - 25
Opening party: Saturday, February 3, 7 - 9 PM
For many years, Eric Bellis, a native of the UK living in Los Angeles, has for
some years created images of farm animals inspired by 19th-century English painting.
While continuing his tradition of farm animal paintings, Bellis has recently
turned his attention to North America’s largest native land mammal, the
buffalo. For his first solo show, Eric has done 15 paintings, all of them
of buffalo. And, of course, they are all on our website, http://www.yarddog.com/.
Eric is a long-time member of the fab UK band the Mekons and a solo recording
artist on Bloodshot Records.

Up the Empire (ex-Kilowatthours) announces album release date
NYC's Up the Empire is basically the band
Kilowatthours under a new name and sound. The name change came about
in the
summer of 2004 when they found themselves writing darker, heavier music.
Elements of Oneida, Neu! and Dinosaur Jr. abound, leaving us to exclaim,
"
Hey, you got your crunchy noise pop in my krautrock," and then to
retort,
"
And you got your krautrock all up in my crunchy noise!" At which
point we
begin to salivate and nod our heads rhythmically while the band churns
and
drones and sings in unison. Up the Empire. Way up. Their new record will
be out 5.08.07 and will be distributed via Red Eye. Local NYC folk will
be
able to grab a copy of the record as early as 2.10.07 when they play
the
Mercury Lounge. As for the rest of us, aside from a smattering of weekend
shows on the East Coast, we'll have to wait until May. In the meantime,
dig
www.myspace.com/uptheempire for sounds and whatnot.
Triclops! Releases
Album, Looks at Us Funny
Sick Room Records
is an under-heralded Chicago
label. Look to the left on our main page and you'll see we, however,
have
not lacked in the heralding department vis-à-vis our favorite
Chicago record
releaser. And they're at it again, releasing the debut EP from Triclops!,
next week,
2.06.07. The band has ex-members of Bottles and Skulls, Fleshies, Victims
Family and Lower Forty-Eight, and
it sounds like it, but even better. And fucked up. The singer's got
some
crazy effects on his voice and it all warbles up next to the clanging
and
banging of the instruments quite nicely. Recalls the Jesus Lizard singing
if David Yow was singing underwater and if the band's amps spat dirt
along
with the snarl. Word has it they've signed to GSL for their full-length,
so
kudos to Sick Room for getting a piece of the action.
Thee More Shallows signs to Anticon; hip-hop album to follow?
Yo yo yo. Thee
More Shallows has signed to Anticon,
which may raise a few
eyebrows among those who think of the label as a haven for indie hip-hop.
But with
tripped out artists like Restiform Bodies and 13 & God (members of
themselves and The
Notwist), not to mention the lush instrumental palettes and imaginations
of
Dosh, Why? and Odd Nosdam, the move makes perfect sense. Read about Thee
More Shallows in the current issue of Copper Press (CP28). Their new
album,
Book of Bad Breaks, will be released this spring, with a tour
to follow.

54º40' or Fight! to release new records; inks new distribution deal
After several years with Allegro Music/NAIL, 54º40' or Fight! (sister
company of this here magazine) has signed a distribution deal with Red
Eye.
On 4.03.07, the label will introduce to the listening public (and those
who
shun society, whether they be vampires or pretentious intellectuals,
in
private as well) debut albums from Ferocious Eagle and Paper Airplanes.
Both bands will be touring in April, with Ferocious Eagle spending the
first
ten days of its tour with Jade Tree Records artists Panda & Angel.
Paper
Airplanes was featured on Spin.com

and www.myspace.com/paperairplanes for sounds, news, tour dates and to
read
comments from enthusiastic fans and snarky inside jokes from the bands'

Daughters Sino-Russian Protest Tour
Well, it's probably not in protest, knowing the political leanings of
indie
rockers, to the Sino-Russian treaty, signed in 2001 by ex-KGB and current
thug Russian President Vladimir Putin and Google's main man in China,
Jiang
Zemin, himself no stranger to oppressive leadership. After all, "friendship
and cooperation" that would result in a "just and rational
new international
order" along totalitarian Communist lines sounds like an undergrad
majoring
in international relations' wet dream. "Down with US hegemony! Up
with
forced famine and labor camps and the slaughter of 250,000 dogs!"
Why all the hubbub? Well, Daughters is touring with Chinese Stars and
Russian Circles - and Cattle Decapitation. And we all know what Cattle
Decapitation stands for: Headless cows. Well, at least Daughters is
starting their tour in Japan. Now there's a rational country devoid of
a
history of imperialist ambitions. Oh wait. Scratch that.
