Chet Atkins/Les Paul
Chester and Lester
RCA/Legacy

Recorded over two days in May 1975, this guitar summit captures two of the undisputed masters of the instrument in fine form. While Les Paul’s importance as an innovator in sound recording and the electric guitar will never be forgotten, his ability to play circles around most of the punks who’ve come up in the years since he decided to electrify the six string has, sadly, gone underappreciated in recent times. Ideally, this reissue will open the floodgates on more interest in his playing as he and Atkins are in fine, loose and friendly form here, across tunes such as “Birth Of The Blues,” “Avalon,” “Caravan” and “Love Come Back To Me.” There’s plenty of joking, talking and plain ol’ jammin’ to be heard throughout and each track - including the four bonus ones - reminds us of the supreme joy that music and music created and played on the guitar can be. One of the greatest duo guitar records ever made, in a rarefied league that includes John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana’s Love, Devotion, Surrender and few others. - Jedd Beaudoin (2007, The Daily Copper)
