The Album Leaf |
While not always pinned down to the change of the seasons, there are plenty of albums released each week that either match up with the calendar date or absolutely do not. Logically, the last week of April does not scream out as prime time for the latest Black Heart Procession release, logic Touch and Go took to heart as they released The Spell on May 9. As excellent as this disc was, it just did not fit as the feel good hit of the summer. While that was in jest, the release of the new Album Leaf disc has arrived on the doorsteps of the more compatible beginning of cooler and gloomier weather. Let this not mislead you into thinking Into the Blue Again is a harbinger of calamity for it is not. However is does have a general vibe of melancholy and reflection. Kicking off with the magnificent “The Light,” Jimmy Lavalle creates an instrumental that paints an image of regret and loss while it keeps a peaceful vibe as well. Continuing with “Always For You” – with vocals no less – the cut has a noticeable Pinback vibe running through it which also holds true for the record’s other vocal tracks “Writings On The Wall” and “Broken Arrow.” While 2004’s In a Safe Place did not possess much resemblance to his previous work in Tristeza, Into the Blue Again undeniably has touches of the aforementioned outfit in it. The only problem that creeps up with Into the Blue Again is that it is a tad too long. This is punctuated by the comparatively dull “Wishful Thinking.” However, that is just nickels and dimes in the larger picture. In the world of instrumental rock, The Album Leaf has proven to be an entirely reliable entity. Into the Blue Again, that reputation continues. - David Lichius (2006, The Daily Copper) |
