Karl Broadie
Nowhere Now Here
Laughing Outlaw

Scottish-born Australia-dwelling Karl Broadie has garnered comparisons to some of the finest voices in Americana, whether it be Wilco, Townes Van Zandt or Tom Waits. Steve Forbert might be more appropriate, though, because Broadie has a similar hoarse sweetness to his voice and a similar sad whimsicality to the music beneath that. Such comparisons become apparent on the title track of this release as well as on tunes such as “After it’s Over,” “If Not for You” and “Leave on a Light.” But how is he? OK. Broadie’s not yet breaking new ground all on his lonesome - the hallmarks of influence run fairly deep here, thus we don’t feel like we’re being welcomed into the front room of greatness as much we’re being asked to sit by the fire with a friend and his guitar. And that’s OK. – Jedd Beaudoin
