Enablers
Output Negative Space
Neurot Recordings

Mood rules the roost for San Francisco’s Enablers. Not unlike Abilene, Shipping News, and June of 44, Enablers frequently shifts from the mellow and the mid-tempo to cathartic and bombastic within a single cut. With Joe Goldring (ex-Swans) sharing guitar duties with Kevin Thomson and Joe Byrnes keeping time, Enablers really stands out due to the voice of Pete Simonelli. With a voice that approaches baritone, Simonelli speaks his prose with a Burroughs-like cadence. Combining poetry with rock is more often than not a unequivocal disaster, however with the ever changing nature of Enablers’ music, Simonelli’s delivery coalesces rather well. Throughout Output Negative Space Simonelli goes from dominating the mix in the quieter moments (obviously) to being interrupted and buried when things get noisy. In addition, Enablers possesses a rare aura of cool that is all but nonexistent in post-punk. While this disc will not appeal to everyone, those who enjoy rock with shifts and sways will not be disappointed with Output Negative Space. - David Lichius (2006, The Daily Copper)
