Wiley
Playtime is Over
Big Dada

One of the true innovators and patriarchs of the grime scene in UK who never quite got his due in the press (at least stateside) alongside his contemporaries such as Dizzee Rascal and Lady Sov, Wiley’s brief “retirement” has been shelved for the moment which is a good thing in hopes that he can get some much deserved props on this side of the pond. What was supposed to be his last album, Playtime grooves thick with Wiley’s dense Brit accent and gusto about growing up on the streets of the Bow district of London with cautionary tales of urban life like “Johnny Was a Bad Boy”. With the piston banging beats and claps from the 808 and plenty of rickety bass and broken breakbeats, Wiley wears his bravado on his sleeve but doesn’t come off like a materialistic alpha male buffoon. Some of the American “hardest” rappers would be wise to heed his path. - Chris Pacifico (2007, The Daily Copper)
