Sonic Youth
Daydream Nation (deluxe edition)
DGC

It’s still hard to believe that this album sold so poorly when it came out nineteen years ago yet went on to become a touchstone of modern day alternative rock. Numbers like “Hey Joni” and “Eric’s Trip” epitomize an album laden with raving guitar infusions and blasts of feedback while Lee Renaldo, Kim Gordon, and Thurston Moore mostly delve into uber-poetic lyrics. Some say this was the start of contemporary shoegaze music in the states while on some other level it, along with Guns N’ Roses Appetite for Destruction and Nirvana’s Nevermind, provided the missing link or ripple effect in what would eventually render all of the hair rock glitz of the ‘80’s as a completely ludicrous fad in which the musicians could no longer be taken seriously or seem relevant as most of them are probably trying hard just to get a gig at a state fair these days. Included with the deluxe edition is a second disc with a live version of each of the tracks and contrary to live albums, they do not suck, as well as a few covers. No self-loving hipster or anti-hipster should be without this. - Chris Pacifico (2007, The Daily Copper)
