A
memorable, fistful-of-razors-and-brass assault on the senses that takes
the conscience of hardcore and blends it with the symphonic depth of classic
death and thrash metal, arriving at a hybrid that’s as memorable
as it is moshable. There’s so much forgettable hardcore in this world,
so much stuff that you forget about thirty seconds after the sweat and
fury fade from the speakers, that it’s refreshing to hear a band
working at this level of musicianship and songwriting capabilities.
It helps that the guitar duo of Rémi Verreault and Michael Beaudoin
(no relation to me) tears into each riff with the abandon of a storm-starved
wolf and that vocalist Jessy Baron can scream with the best of the Swedish
mayhem makers and outshines the vast majority of North American hardcore
throats with his impressive and frightening yowls (Check out tunes such
as “Years Of Feminism Destroyed” and “Matthew Sheppard,
Carlos Giuliani….” for examples.).
GFK, which is rounded out by bassist Sonny Létourneau and drummer
André Verreault - himself nothing short of a metal-maddened mofo,
proves that it’s often the riffs and not the words that stirs the
head toward action. Praise be to these lads for using their skills for
awesome. – Jedd Beaudoin
