Beirut
The Flying Club Cup
Ba Da Bing

As if isn't not enough that Zach Condon is prodigiously talented (did you hear Beirut's Gulag Orkestar?), the 21-year old is already developing tremendous versatility as a musical artist to boot. His latest CD, The Flying Club Cup, moves further into full-band arrangements and away from his laptop pop roots. It's also an homage to Parisian music and France itself. Eastern European influences are detectable, but the record is saturated with Francophilic music; particularly affecting is the rustic yet elegant "Cliquot" and the earnest "Cherbourg." His solo singing is quite lovely ("Forks and Knives" is a delight), but Condon thrives equally well on the CD's stirring group vocal settings, such as "Nantes," the carousel ride of "A Sunday Smile," and "St. Apollonia." If his next album is just as much an exponential development, Lord help us all. - Christian Carey (2007, The Daily Copper)
