The Velvet Underground
Live At Max's Kansas City (2004 reissue)
Atlantic

Yeah, this is a little bit different than the Live at Max’s Kansas City I got about fifteen years ago - which was, of course, a CD reissue then, too. For one thing, it is a completely live album, with no studio tracks stuck on it, like my old copy has. That, and this is a two-CD set with a full seventeen tracks on it, including two versions of “Sweet Jane” and “Lonesome Cowboy Bill” on it. The real choice part of this collection, though, besides the music, is the great liner notes, which include quotes from different members of the Velvet Underground about this show in particular, including Moe Tucker’s revelation hat she came to this show specifically because Lou Reed had told her confidentially that this was going to be his last night with The Velvet Underground. I’ve never been a huge fan of live recordings myself, but this album has always stood out in my mind as one of the exceptions, as the live recording of it makes these intimate songs seem even more beautifully close and sensitive to the point of near claustrophobia. – Holly Day (2005, The Daily Copper)
