Angel of the Odd
Fear Of Flying (EP)
Self-released

Really promising start with the first track, “The Bright Side,” which recalls Tool and Dead Soul Tribe with a dash of the late, great Kevin Gilbert thrown in for good measure. But the disc falters from there, as the band seems to stray from that sound with the mellower, more atmospheric “East Is West.” That’s an OK enough tune, but taken together with “The Bright Side” and the closing “Downsizing,” which calls to mind something like Jethro Tull sitting in with a contemporary punk band, it becomes difficult to know exactly where the outfit wants to go. Any of the three directions represented here seem fine, but this listener prefers the band choose one path and then follow that. – Jedd Beaudoin
