Hasil Adkins
The Wild Man
Norton Records

The original Wild Man from West Virginia, mixing blues and surf and rockabilly and old school country and Appalachian yodeling and bluegrass and just plain rock’n’roll all together and mostly playing it on just his guitar, really fast and all by himself. It’s impossible to pigeonhole him into a genre - people either love him or hate him. The Cramps covered lots of his music, and one could say he was a direct influence on their sleazy, snake-oil type of rock. His songs are loaded with sweetness and badness, sexism and free love, and references to food. The cover’s great on this album, which was originally recorded back in 1988 - a big picture of Hasil Adkins shoving his hand up some woman’s skirt while playing on stage. Dirty old men will always be cool. RIP, Hasil. – Holly Day (2005, The Daily Copper)
