Jake Brennan and the Confidence Men
Love and Bombs
Yep Roc

A fairly straightforward but absolutely refreshing disc from Jake Brennan and the Confidence Men that’s one part a flashback to ‘80s unsung heroes such as the Del Lords, the Del Fuegos, Tommy Cromwell and the Young Rumblers, and one part a salute to Bruce before that damned Born In The USA record. (In fact, the fine “Believe Me” could very well be an electric version of the Boss’ “Atlantic City” with different lyrics.).

Throughout Brennan demonstrates his ability to write rousing rockers such as the AC/DC on Stones “Shake ‘Em Down,” the (early) Los Lobos-inflected “June Is As Cold As December” and the throat throttling “Always So Easy.” But he’s also able to create touching, reflective (“Stepdad’s Truck,” “Sarah’s Got A New Favorite Song”) material that speaks not only to his versatility but also to the vast scope of his vision.

But maybe the real treat of this album is the aforementioned “Believe Me,” which features a guest turn from singer-songwriter Sarah Borges, who gels unbelievably well with Brennan and makes you yearn to hear more from here - it’s a great moment on the album to be sure: Two of the most promising up-and-coming voices in singer-songwriterdom sharing the spotlight and breaking your heart all at the same time. (You can watch a documentary about the making of this record on the bonus DVD, by the way.).
