Gregor Samsa's LP 55:12 is filled with post rock that is at turns powerfully rendered and deliciously atmospheric. "Makeshift Shelters" is an ambling slow-core boy-girl duet. "Even Numbers" sticks closely to the famous glacially paced and dynamic approach to post-rock, reveling in loud-soft contrasts; however, wrapped within this tried and true formula are a number of affecting tunes and powerful harmonic progressions. On "What I Can Manage," sinuous vocals wend their way over a chordal ostinato, at first frail, but eventually fleshed out into a wall of sound. "We'll Lean that way Forever" creates a delicately hued tapestry out of swaths of reverberant guitar glissandi. "Lessening" is another slow-paced composition; but its hushed vocals and lush textural explorations leave one glad that the band has savored every moment. - Christian Carey (2006, The Daily Copper) |
