The Appleseed Cast |
Lawrence, KS has long been a strong rival to Omaha, NE as the epicenter of the Midwestern indie-rock scene, and despite the fact that they’re not a household name, the epicenter of Lawrence has long been The Appleseed Cast. Despite burning through more drummers than Spinal Tap, the band continues it’s evolution from “emo” to “dreamo” and now seems poised to capture the “introspective rock band” crown. While Chris Crisi, Aaron Pillar, and Co. still sporadically venture into dream rock territory, gone are the loop-filled, effects-laden ethereal instrumentals that dominated the Low Level Owl double CD set a few years back. What remains are the complex and meditative arrangements, superior songwriting and top notch musicianship that have from the beginning been an Appleseed staple, albeit less aggressive (if only slightly) and more mature in nature. In retrospect, inventive drumming and intertwining guitar arpeggios combined with Crisi’s impassioned vocals have always been omnipresent in Appleseed Past. Here, they still exist, but the difference on Peregrine, is that now the band seems more patient, more self-assured, and less susceptible to forays into self-indulgence, giving the Midwest’s best-kept secret a new accessibility without the sudden departure of old forms that could potentially alienate the bands loyal fan base.
