Black Lips
Los Valientes Del Mundo Nuevo
Vice

The self-described “flower punk” kids from Atlanta have cut a live album in the most appropriate of places with that being Tijuana. The Black Lips embody the most skuzzy garage punk and blues druthers so filthy that the debauchery inducing Mexican town makes the album a joy with the whole crowd getting rowdy in a free-wheeling vicinity. The locals can be heard blaring their mariachi horns and downing shots of tequila in the background while the Lips hold true to their sound that channels the likes of MC5, the Sonics and the 13th Floor Elevators composed of chicken scratch guitar riffs and bluesy hooks. Most live albums have always been rather sub par because they can’t really capture the essence of being there but Del Mundo succeeds in the manner of which it thrives in a dingy atmosphere which evokes the black-caked-fingernail sound of this joyously sleazy sounding band. - Chris Pacifico (2007, The Daily Copper)
