Some have noted that not everything on this latest outing from veteran act Spoon constitutes a “real” song. And it’s true. There are some tracks (“The Infinite Pet,” “Was It You?”) that are really just extended grooves with some words thrown o’er the top of ‘em. And that’s maybe part of what makes Gimme Fiction such a cool album - it never tries to be more than a good time, never aspires to be great art and becomes something extremely close as a result. Reminiscent of the Stones circa Some Girls, classic Mott The Hoople and even Queen during its often maligned Hot Space era, Gimme Fiction is refreshing and spirited and one of the great records of the year. – Jedd Beaudoin |
