Minmae
I'd be Scared, Were You Still Burning
Greyday Productions

Vocalist/guitarist Sean Brooks, bassist Josh Kempa, and drummer Chris Calvert allow a bunch of influences to infiltrate their band Minmae's full-length album I'd be Scared, Were You Still Burning. "German Girl, She Was American" wears a Bowie posture proudly, "Smiling with Teeth" is ebullient noisy indie rock. "Experimental Pop Song" combines Brooks adopting Lou Reed styled vocals in the verse with a powerfully surging chorus.

While it's clear that Minmae has a sponge-like capacity for soaking up pop references, they also put their own stamp on songs. "Let Him Out" revels in quirky tempo and demeanor shifts. "Dimorphic Hips have Chances Still" is an alt-country inflected composition with considerable spaciousness and an anthemic quality. The inevitable challenge for Minmae will be emerging from their potpourri of poses as an individual and memorable entity; still, I'd be Scared, Were You Still Burning is enjoyably eclectic. - Christian Carey
