Carla Bley
The Lost Chords
WATT/ECM

Who else besides pianist Carla Bley could fashion a fifteen-minute-long suite around that old chestnut, "Three Blind Mice," and have the result be engaging and inspired throughout? On her latest album, Bley is joined by saxophonist Andy Sheppard, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Billy Drummond; The Lost Chords is filled with impeccable arrangements and attractive performances. While no one will mistake Bley's version of "Hip Hop" for Eminem any time soon, this jaunty piece evokes bluesy playing from the pianist and a stylish solo from Sheppard. "Tropical Depression" adopts a lyrical and slightly mysterious vibe, with lush piano harmonies offset by undulating bass-lines and cool saxophone melodies. The title tune is another three-movement suite. Not only do Bley and company find some stirring and unusual chords in this composition and throughout this disc, but they present a blend of polish and invention that is all too rare on most of today's jazz releases. - Christian Carey
