Please Step Out of the Vehicle |
For a disc whose running time is under thirty minutes, Portland, OR’s Please Step Out of the Vehicle throws in many musical tricks on their debut disc. Tossing in flute, trombone, saxophone, a Nintendo Game Boy, accordion, glockenspiel, violin, organ, and keyboards along with the usual suspects, PSOOTV have crafted a nifty record of quirky and carefree pop. While the disc begins with the upbeat “I Could Move,” the majority of these cuts are slow to medium tempo. Blending in influences from Modest Mouse, Mock Orange, and Pavement, Sleeping Right and the Best in Homeopathic Magic is thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. Aside from the later half of “We Will Go Everywhere (Part 2),” the eleven cuts that comprise this rather short LP are fairly evenly matched in terms of quality. However, the geeks will surely enjoy the Nintendo Game Boy composed “Special Logic.” In fact, PSOOTV possesses a geeky quality throughout - which for indie pop is a very good quality. Indie pop is at its best when has an off-kilter aura about it. With Sleeping Right…you will find plenty. - David Lichius (2006, The Daily Copper) |
